A junior football spectator has been charged after he allegedly assaulted an umpire during an under 14s game at the weekend.

A junior footy match in the state’s northeast has been marred by an alleged horror assault.

Victoria Police confirmed to Leader on Monday afternoon that a spectator allegedly assaulted the 49-year-old umpire during the under 14 Albury Wodonga Junior Football League match between Yarrawonga and Wodonga.

“Yarrawonga police have charged a 47-year-old man after an umpire was assaulted during a football match in Yarrawonga on Sunday,” a Victoria Police spokesperson said.

“It is alleged the victim was approached by an angry spectator on the field when he was assaulted about 11.20am.

“The victim, a 49-year-old Yarrawonga man received non-life-threatening injuries.

“The Tangambalanga man was arrested and charged with recklessly cause injury, make threats to kill and unlawful assault.

“He has been bailed to appear at the Cobram Magistrates’ Court on October 26.”

AFL Victoria spokesperson Nick Hulett said the matter was also under investigation by the state’s governing body.

“AFL Victoria has been made aware of an alleged incident involving a spectator assaulting an umpire during an Albury Wodonga Junior Football League match on the weekend,” he said.

“The AFL strongly condemns any form of violence at all levels of the game.

“The matter has been referred to the AFL Integrity Unit.”

Wodonga went onto win the match by 34 points.

The match was the second of three held at the venue on the day.

A Yarrawonga Football Club said the club would not comment as the matter is now before the courts.

Wodonga were also contacted for comment.
