Yarrabah School needs community cash to build hydrotherapy pool

A small Aspendale school with a big heart is hoping a masquerade dinner will raise the money needed to build a hydrotherapy pool.

THIS year’s fundraising dinner has never been more important for Yarrabah Special School.

The event needs to raise more than ever before so that a much-needed hydrotherapy centre can be built.

The State Government allocated $500,000 towards it as part of a $21 million upgrade of the school but the centre, which includes a 10 metre hydrotherapy pool that can be heated to 34C and has hoist access, costs $708,000.

Principal Matthew Harris said the school would pick up the rest of the bill.

GROWING SCHOOL PLEADS FOR UPGRADE

“We have raised about $100,00 over the past two years but there is still a long way to go,” Mr Harris said.

“Our fundraising dinner is always a major event for the school and this year even more so.”

He said while it would have been easier if the State Government had provided the full amount needed for the pool the school was committed to the project.

“We are so grateful that the government has recognised the school’s value by funding the overall upgrade and now it’s time for the community to get behind us too,” he said.

Mr Harris said once built the pool would be available for community groups, physiotherapists and those working with people with disabilities both before and after school.

“It will be the only pool of its kind in Kingston,” he said.

The Masquerade Dinner is on Saturday, August 25 at Woodlands Golf Club.

Comedian and radio personality Tracy Bartram is on board as MC and there will be live and silent auctions.

Ms Bartram urged people to gather their friends and book a table.

“Yarrabah is a wonderful school and it really needs support to get this pool,” she said.

Ms Bartram said she had seen first hand the benefits the school offered.

“My friend Tommy goes there and he loves it so much. He’s shown me around and is so proud of his school,” she said.

Tommy, 11, is the son of Ms Bartram’s friends Fran and Doug Duncanson.

He was born with Down syndrome.

Ms Bartram also has an adult son with Tourette syndrome.
