A TASTY but frugal burger created in a Braeside kitchen is the nation’s best cheap eat, according to a popular food delivery service.
The Famished Wolf took out the Menulog title for Best Cheap Eat 2018 with its $8 cheesy burger.
Restaurant owner Simon McNeilly said the win was an honour and demonstrated the eatery was “on the right track”.

“We’re all about value for money,” he said.
“You can produce a tasty burger using quality ingredients without having to charge the earth.”
The win was also proof a recent switch from traditional lunch bar to burger and brats joint was the right move.
“People love the burgers and our sides (onion rings and loaded fries),” Mr McNeilly said.
“The area is changing and our lunch trade is reflecting that.
“We used to have mainly tradies coming in early but now we have factory and office workers coming in later and celebrating birthdays and other achievements.
“We’re also getting a lot of people who live in the area coming in for dinner.”
A drinks list that includes craft beer and an alfresco area had also helped transform the business, he said.
Demand for Famished Wolf burgers prompted Mr McNeilly to open a second venue in Patterson Lakes about six weeks ago.
“We’ve also had some requests from people interested in a franchise so we might look at that down the track,” he said.
“Right now we’re focusing on the two venues we have and looking forward to a bumper summer.”
The Famished Wolf is at 13 Macbeth St, Braeside and Harbour Plaza, Shop 9/21 Thompson Rd, Patterson Lakes.
