Tack attack continues on Kew Boulevard cyclists, five years on

The much-hated Yarra Boulevard tacker has struck again, with fed-up cyclists finding more dangerous shrapnel deliberately scattered along the route.

Kew Boulevard’s tack attack continues with cyclists once again finding dangerous shrapnel on their bike paths.

Metal tacks have been showing up on cycling paths along Kew Boulevard now for five years, and cyclist George Mihailides has had a gutful.

“It’s raining tacks on the boulevard,” Mr Mihailides said.

“There comes a time when you wonder what’s going to change in the next five years,” he said.

Mr Mihailides is a regular user of the road and said he thought the only way to stop the bizarre attacks was to have authorities install lighting and security cameras.

“Its hard to comprehend who would be so vindictive to do this,” he said.

Boroondara Local Area Commander Inspector Steve Noy said police were monitoring the tack situation closely, but it was difficult to tell if the tacks found recently were part of a new “drop” or residual tacks left over from a previous incident.

Sweepers patrolled the area to clean up the dangerous shrapnel, he said, and a dedicated team of detectives were investigating who could be behind the attacks.

“We’re certainly working on the presumption it could be one or more (people involved),” Insp Noy said.

“If I had to guess, I’d have to suggest it may be a person who has a beef with cyclists.

“If you get a puncture in your bike and a flat tyre, it could cause you to lose control and crash. So the potential danger is quite extreme and it’s only sheer good luck that someone hasn’t been killed by falling (off their bike) in front of a car.”

Insp Noy said police units were tasked to the boulevard during every shift to keep the area safe.
