Hawthorn East residents are protesting against a $195,000 plan to redevelop Fritsch Holzer Park.

It is already an off-leash dog park, but Boroondara Council will start work on a dedicated fenced dog park and bike trails in June.

Facebook page Friends of Fritsch Holzer Park has 200 members largely opposing the plan.

Group member Ben McInerney said he didn’t want the “suburban oasis” open parkland carved up.

He said residents didn’t want another built environment and feared bike tracks would be dangerous for humans and dogs.

Boroondara Environment and Infrastructure director Bruce Dobson said there were other shared paths in off leash locations and the safety of dogs and path users had not been a problem.

Public consultation has just closed and responses are being considered by the council.

“Council will approach the issue with an open mind and all options ranging from proceeding as exhibited to abandoning the proposal are available,” he said.
