THERE might be no point crying over spilt milk, but there’s every reason to recycle your used bottles off at South Melbourne market this month.
The market has teamed up with a global waste management company to convert milk bottles into pipes, pallets and decking boards that will be used to make furniture for the market.

Vanden Recycling’s gutsy Mil-Tek 2205 waste compactor can crush and bale more than 50kg of milk bottles in one go — that’s over 1000 bottles.
It is part of Sustainable September at the market, which includes a range of activities and workshops aimed at helping people reduce waste.
South Melbourne Market general manager Ian Sumpter said the milk bottle recycling initiative was a “win-win for our planet”.
“It demonstrates how businesses like South Melbourne Market in collaboration with innovators like Vanden Recycling can provide a sustainable way for the market to deal with waste … and produce repurposed commodities such as chairs and tables that can be used by the entire community,” he said.
Earlier this year the market banned single-use plastic bags and all green waste is converted into organic compost, which is sold as Market Magic.
