Port Phillip Bay: New rules for jet skiers ahead of summer

When jet skiers hit Port Phillip Bay this summer they will have to abide by a new rule which authorities hope will curb risky riders, with those caught breaking it facing a $330 hit to the hip pocket.

Jet ski users on Port Phillip Bay are being warned to be extra careful this summer with Maritime Safety Victoria set to introduce a new waterway rule.

Freestyling within the 5-knot speed restriction zones, including performing moves like doughnuts, circles or weaving, will be banned.

From December 16 the new rule will restrict “irregular” riding of personal watercraft (PWC) in 5-knot zones and riders will be required to navigate their craft in the safest, most direct course from the shore heading seaward, or from the sea towards the shore.

MSV acting director Cameron Toy said the decision came after an extensive public consultation process.

“There was overwhelming support for the new rule with 67 per cent of respondents supporting it,” Mr Toy said.

Anyone in breach can receive a $330 infringement notice.

“The new rule will require PWC operators to operate their craft in a predictable manner which will provide greater certainty to other waterway users on the path they intend to take,” Mr Toy said.

“The rule prohibits the irregular riding of PWCs in five-knot speed restricted zones around Port Phillip, to address the risk of incidents involving PWCs and other beach users.”

Mr Toy said anyone riding their craft in an irregular manner – which includes weaving or diverting course that another person would be unable to predict, surfing down or jumping over or across any waves, wake or wash, or freestyling, which includes manoeuvres such as sharp turns, circular or semicircular operation of their PWC – can jeopardise the safety of other water users.

“This rule brings waters around Port Phillip Bay in line with other jurisdictions, such as New South Wales, and will simplify compliance activities undertaken by MSV, Victoria Police, Parks Victoria and appointed Local Government Authorities.”

“MSV is committed to ensuring that everyone, including boaters, jet skiers, fishers and swimmers, can enjoy a safe day on the water,” said Mr Toy.

It comes after life savers warned it was “only a matter of time before someone was killed” due to jet ski hoons last summer.

A PWC is defined as having an engine used for propulsion, fully enclosed hull, not retaining water and operated by standing, kneeling or sitting astride.
