A family has been saved from a raging inferno that engulfed their house by the most unlikely of shaggy saviours.

When fire took hold of a Garnet St property in Brunswick on October 31, Boris the staghound/wolf cross was alert to the danger, warning his owners of the impending trouble.

The homeowners quickly called emergency services and the MFB arrived less than six minutes later.

When crews arrived the fire, which started in the detached laundry area, was threatening neighbouring properties on both sides.

More than 25 firefighters fought for 30 minutes to bring the blaze under control, limiting damage to surrounding properties.

The house was severely damaged.

But because of Boris’ nose for danger, Boris and his family were unharmed.

MFB’s specialist Fire Investigators later determined that the cause was electrical.

MFB Acting Commander Brad Watkins said as the weather gets warmer Victorians would often turn their attention to bushfires, but the importance of ensuring homes were fire safe year round shouldn’t be lost.

“Whether you live in an apartment or suburban home it’s essential you take fire seriously as the days gets hotter,” he said.

“Most of the house fires we attend can be prevented but it is up to Victorians to take the proper precautions to keep their loved ones safe.”
