Elderly Mount Waverley man scammed out thousands of dollars via scam call

A con artist convinced a 94-year-old man he needed to leave his bank cards in a letterbox in order for them to be reissued before spending almost $10,000 on iPhones.

Police are searching for a man they think can help with their enquiries after the Mount Waverley victim received the scam phone call on September 19.

The swindler pretended to be from a telecommunications company, asking for the man’s bank details and telling him to leave the cards in the letterbox.

The scammer then stole the cards and used them to purchase four new iPhones worth $9000 at a store in Malvern East and another store in Chadstone later that day.

The thief also tried to purchase $4500 worth of electronics at another store in Chadstone but the transaction was declined.

They then tried to withdraw money at multiple ATMs on Ashburton’s High St and Mount Waverley’s Hamilton Pl.

Police have released photos of a man they’d like to speak to.

The man is seen wearing a brown puffer jacket, black jeans and beige tshirt.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or assist online.
