The Seaford man who allegedly stole Richmond star Shai Bolton’s premiership medals has been sentenced over a series of aggravated burglaries on small southeastern businesses.
Brodie Knott, 36, pleaded guilty in the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on November 13 to more than 100 charges relating to burglaries across Melbourne’s southeastern suburbs, after a police raid on his home turned over cash and missing items alongside the stolen grand final medals.
Richmond icon Shai Bolton’s medals from the 2019 and 2020 grand finals were stolen from his Malvern home in December 2022 and recovered by chance when investigators raided Knott’s Seaford home 20 months after they were stolen.
No details about Bolton’s medals were heard in court.
After an application to be released on bail in late October failed, Knott was released from police custody on Wednesday, and is set to complete an 18 month sentence within the community for the dozens of burglaries.
Knott admitted guilt to a total of 104 charges, including 29 counts of burglary, 29 counts of criminal damage, 17 counts of theft as well as the theft of a motor vehicle.
In October, the court heard the offending happened over a 30-day period, where Mr Knott smashed into the small businesses, stealing “mostly cash”.
On Wednesday Magistrate Marita Altman said Knott’s burglaries had inflicted “trauma, shock and financial suffering” on his victims, who were primarily small businesses.
She also said Knott’s drug addiction contributed to his offending but he has the ability to turn his life around.
Knott was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment minus the 78 days he had already spent in pre-sentence detention.
His imprisonment period will be served in the community as part of an alcohol and drug treatment order.
He will also have to undergo detox, drug testing and follow all directions of the drug court.
