Cavoodles are king in the inner-suburbs and staffys reign supreme down south, but it’s labradors that are the most common dog breed across town.

A Leader survey of councils has revealed the most popular pooch types in the south.

Cavoodles were top dog in Bayside, Glen Eira and Port Phillip.

Down in Casey and Frankston, staffordshire bull terriers topped the list.

Meanwhile Kingston, Mornington and Greater Dandenong loved maltese terriers and their crossbreeds.

But labradors led the way as the most-registered breed in the region – and across greater Melbourne.

Labrador Retriever Club of Victoria secretary Evy Tano said their happy, outgoing temperaments and adaptability made labradors ideal pets – for the right owners, who could give them regular exercise and ongoing training.

“The most important thing they need is human companionship. They can’t be happy if they are just left in the backyard on their own,” she said.

“Even the most docile dogs can become destructive if they are unfulfilled.”

Ms Tano advised potential pet owners to do their research and ensure they found a dog that was suited to their lifestyle, living space and family type.

It was also vital to teach children how to interact with dogs, no matter what the breed chosen, she said.

Overall there were more than 150,000 dogs registered in Melbourne’s southernern suburbs.
