It’s official – Jack Russell is the most popular dog breed in the northwest.

Move over labradors, border collies and staffys – the Jack Russell is the king in the northwest.

A Leader survey of councils revealed the trusty, two-tone terrier the list of most-registered dog breeds in the northwestern suburbs.

Labradors came in second followed by maltese terriers, staffordshire bull terriers and border collies.

Overall there were more than 119,000 dogs registered across the 14 councils surveyed.

Border collies were the most popular dog in the Macedon Ranges and maltese crossbreeds took the honours in Moreland and Whittlesea.

But it was the Jack Russell that ruled the north – and the lists in Maribyrnong and Hume – for the sheer number of registrations.
