Budding musicians at Middle Park Primary School have teamed up for a virtual performance of an old classic — with a global pandemic twist.

Parents and staff also joined in the mass singalong for “What Shall We Do With A Global Virus”, a modern remix of sea shanty “Drunken Sailor”.

Principle Tim Newton said the project took about a week from start to finish, with students singing and playing along on violin, trombone and ukulele.

“We love our music at Middle Park Primary and this was about keeping connected, that’s been a major challenge throughout this lockdown,” he said.

“School is a really important place for making those connections so it was important we look for new ways to keep that going.

“The community has been amazing — they’ve really dug deep and turned to each other during this time.

“This was a way of breaking the isolation that can be felt.”

Music teacher Natalya Vagner rewrote and arranged the ditty and the whole school was invited to perform.

“We had teachers and parents and cousins and friends and it actually ended up being a sort of whole of Port Phillip project,” Mr Newton said.

Ms Vagner said the kids had a great time learning and recording the shanty, which aimed to share hope and joy.
