Ice addict Wilfred Botin took so many drugs he had a heart attack

An iced-up Malvern East man who went on an “appalling” drug-fuelled rampage stole credit cards to use on fast food and massage parlour services. And his drug use was so rampant that it almost killed him.

An ice-addled mail thief who used stolen credit cards to buy massage parlour services took so many drugs he later nearly died of a heart attack.

Wilfred Botin, of Malvern East, pleaded guilty to an array of charges including burglary, car theft and arson crimes at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

The court heard Botin and a partner in crime went on a drug-fuelled crime spree last year, stealing bank cards and using them across the southeast.

The court heard he stole a letter containing a bank card from a Mentone mailbox overnight on July 27 last year.

He then used the card to buy cigarettes, pies and pastries from two servos and screwdrivers from a car parts store.

Afterwards he went to a Mentone massage parlour — which was unnamed in court — and used a nicked card to obtain $52 worth of ‘services’ — the detail of which were not revealed.

Throughout the day he bought fuel, gift cards and soft drinks, racking up a total bill of $360 before the victim cancelled the card.

Botin stole letters from mailboxes in Beaumaris, Mentone, Black Rock and Narre Warren looking for any financial-type envelopes before burning the non-bank mail on a grass verge in Nar Nar Goon on August 8.

Fourteen days later Botin and his partner went into the garage of an Officer home and stole a hire car and purse containing a bank card, which they used to buy fast food in Dandenong.

The next day, on August 23, he was caught at his Mentone home, where he admitted his crime spree.

Even after he was arrested and bailed, Botin continued to take so many drugs that he had a heart attack in February.

Now, his defence lawyer said, any ice use would likely “result in death”.

Botin’s lawyer said his client’s offending, fuelled by rampant drug use, was in a confined period of time and he has not committed any crimes since.

He said the heart attack was “solely down to his ice use”.

Magistrate Tara Hartnett said normally such an “appalling” crime spree would result in jail, but there were “significant mitigating factors” regarding his health.

“He’s not going to jail, but he’s so close to it that it’s not funny,” Ms Hartnett said.

“He nearly lost his life from his own drug use; if the penny hasn’t dropped by now, it never will.”

Botin was convicted and placed on an 18-month community corrections order. He must do drug counselling and 120 hours of unpaid work.
