Classy gazebo takes flight narrowly missing family member

A family’s fancy gazebo turned into a flying death trap, narrowly missing a neighbour visiting from the UK. SES volunteers who were called out to retrieve the flyaway structure say it’s fanciest feature survived the crash.

It’s may be one of the suburb’s poshest gazebos, but in a scary twist it turned into a dangerous structure for a family in Aspendale Gardens.

Within 10 minutes of Chelsea’s SES unit putting a Facebook post up on Friday warning people to secure items around their house because of strong winds, they were on the road to remove a gazebo which had taken flight and lodged on a neighbour’s bungalow.

The gazebo had been standing securely in the back garden of the house it took flight from for 10 years.

SES volunteer Phil Wall said over the years they had seen lots of examples of this type of thing.

“But this was by far the most elegant, complete with its own chandelier attached to the middle of it,” he said.

“It was also very lucky for the visitors to the house all the way from the UK.

“The owner’s Mum was in the bungalow, heard the noise and came out, but thanks to a warning from her quick-thinking granddaughter she was able to get out of the way and inside the house to safety before seeing the pergola come to rest.”

Mr Wall said the neighbours came together at the house and there was no ill feeling over the flying pergola.

“It’s a very good reminder that when there are strong winds you need to be careful and make sure you have items secured,” Mr Wall said.

Shortly after removing the pergola from the roof of the bungalow, the unit was called to a tree that had collapsed due to the conditions.
