Cases by region: Bayside positive COVID-19 test results slow down

Bayside’s number of COVID-19 cases has slowed down since April, but as the state suffers a second wave of positive tests some of those have been in the municipality.

Bayside residents are being praised for following social distancing measures as the area only has three active cases of COVID-19.

On April 15 there were 30 people in Bayside who had tested positive for coronavirus, but almost three months later that number has only grown by nine.

While metropolitan Melbourne suffers through a second wave of cases, Bayside hasn’t been immune and currently has three active cases.

Active cases had almost completely gone from Bayside with only one in the area a week ago.

Mayor Clarke Martin said Bayside Council is continuing to support the Bayside community and provide essential services and support during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It’s encouraging that so far, Bayside’s case numbers have remained relatively low,” he said.

“For the most part, our community is doing the right thing and following the appropriate health measures.

“The recent retraction of current restrictions and roll-back to stage 3 restrictions in hot spots is a reminder of how quickly things can escalate.

“We must continue to follow the rules: if you are sick- get tested, if you can work from home – you must work from home, continue to physically distance and practice good hand washing hygiene.

“We all need to do our part in making sure that the impacts of COVID-19 on Bayside and the broader Victorian community are reduced. We must stay vigilant so we can minimise the spread of COVID-19 and protect our most vulnerable residents.”

However, things weren’t always so rosy in the beachside municipality, with a child’s birthday party during the height of lockdown leaving people scratching their heads.

Shocked passers-by dobbed the “arrogant” partygoers into police who busted up the party and fined the organiser $1652.

There was also a confirmed case of COVID-19 in a Year 3 student at St Mary’s Primary School in Hampton on June 20.

The latest Department of Health and Human Services data shows Victoria’s total number of positive cases jumped to 3560 on Saturday.

Bayside City Council said it was urging residents to abide by the rules set by State and Federal Governments.

There are currently 535 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Victoria which may have been acquired through community transmission.

The closest testing stations are at Southland Shopping Centre, the Alfred and Monash Hospitals. You can also have a test with your GP.
