2017 Richmond Football Club premiership diorama by Harry Elkus to raise funds for Alannah and Madeleine Foundation

A PANORAMIC diorama celebrating the Tigers’ barnstorming 2017 premiership win will be the centrepiece of a new AFL-inspired art exhibition to open in Caulfield. And its artist has a unique plan to use it to raise funds for the Alannah & Madeleine Foundation.

Richmond 2017 Premiership Diorama

AFL supporters are among the most passionate in the world but that passion goes to atomic levels when their side win the premiership.

But the passion of Richmond’s Yellow and Black army reached a level so far beyond atomic there’s probably not a word to describe it. Those Tigers fans outdid themselves celebrating their club’s drought-breaking 2017 premiership, and some are probably still going.

And that is what led Caulfield artist and AFL lover Harry Elkus to create a sweeping 3D diorama immortalising Richmond’s barnstorming Grand Final win — its first since 1980 — and capturing the supporters’ hard-earned celebration.

Elkus spent 600 hours on the piece, which features hundreds of carefully positioned cutouts of Richmond stars including Dustin Martin, Jack Riewoldt and Trent Cotchin and the club’s passionate fans.

“I made this because I was inspired by the tiger supporters,” he said.

“This diorama is as much about them as it was about the winning the premiership after so long.”

Elkus believes this is his most “engaging” piece yet so he is offering shares in the diorama to try and raise $100,000 for the Alannah & Madeline Foundation.

“If every Richmond member donates one dollar I’ll reach my target,” he said.

He hopes the diorama will find a permanent home at Punt Rd Oval, but until then it will be displayed at the Caulfield Rotary Club’s Aussie Rules — Passion & Pain exhibition.

It will exhibit alongside other artworks also inspired by the passion of footy supporters.

Renowned football writer Martin Flanagan will open the exhibition which runs at the Glen Eira City Council Gallery from September 13 to October 6.
