The hunt for a hit-and-run scooter driver is on after a pedestrian was left with head injuries in Hawthorn East on Boxing Day.

A 64-year-old man from Hawthorn East was struck down by a motorised scooter on Burke Rd at 5.50pm on December 26.

The unsuspecting pedestrian was walking north on the busy road near Ryeburne Ave when the driver of the scooter mounted the gutter.

The driver continued to drive in the same direction as the pedestrian, with foot pegs scraping along the ground.

The scooter collided with the victim, who then fell to the ground, subsequently hitting his head on the footpath.

The rider failed to stop and assist the man, instead fleeing west down Ryeburne Ave, away from the scene of the accident.

Paramedics took the man to hospital, where he was treated for multiple head injuries.

He has since been released from hospital.

Investigators have said the scooter was a Kymco brand and have released an image of the offender riding it.

Witnesses and anyone else with information on the incident or with dashcam footage are urged to call Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000, or make an anonymous online report here.
