A stolen luxury car involved in a high-speed crash in Toorak has left its driver in critical condition.

A man, believed to be in his 30s, was allegedly travelling at high speed when he lost control of a Jaguar sedan and hit a tram stop divider.

Police believe the car continued on before becoming airborne, when it then crashed into a large tree on Toorak Rd.

Subsequently, the Jaguar was split in half and the driver thrown from the vehicle.

Emergency services attended the scene between Glenferrie Rd and Power St at 11.40pm on Wednesday.

Paramedics rushed the man to The Alfred in a critical condition, with both upper and lower body injuries.

Investigators have alleged the Jaguar was stolen from a Phoenix St property during a suspected aggravated burglary, prior to the crash.

The driver remains in hospital in critical condition and is under police guard.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or with dashcam is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a confidential report here.
