They are calling it a first in Carlton Cricket Club’s 159-year history.
The Blues for the first time have selected a female to debut in their men’s program, with Sophie Reid named in the club’s Third XI against Dandenong on Saturday.
Reid, a batter-keeper, is one of Carlton’s leading players in its Women’s Premier side.
Earlier this season she scored her maiden century, 110 against Prahran.
Carlton captain-coach Evan Gulbis said with a few wicketkeepers unavailable due to Covid, plus injuries and school cricket, a position opened up for Reid.
“We see it as an amazing opportunity for the club to help Sophie keep improving her game and hopefully keep pressing for higher honours,” Gulbis said.
“She will be playing in the Third XI and will be keeping and batting in the top four.
“Sophie has completely deserved her opportunity as not only our leading run scorer but a leader of the girls program.”
