ECA: Canterbury score big Dunstan Shield win over Heathmont

In an ECA game full of firsts for Canterbury, it was two debutantes and new captain who produced match winning displays.

If there was ever a perfect example of an immediate impact it came in Canterbury’s latest win.

The Eastern Cricket Association Dunstan Shield ladder leader was powered to victory by two first XI debutantes and first time captain Chris Moore against Heathmont on Saturday.

All-rounder Angus Hume hit 27 runs from 30 balls to help push Canterbury to 7-177 from its 40 overs.

It followed Will Stevenson’s 49-run effort at the top of the order.

Moore, who was leading the side in the absence of Andy Mills due to the birth of his daughter, then tore through Heathmont’s batting order finishing with 3-11 off six overs to have the home side all out for 121.

Hugh McLeish, who was on debut, was in the thick of the action with five catches while Hume finished with 0-27 from his eight overs.

Canterbury coach Steve Seymour said it had been an exciting day for his club.

“It’s fantastic when the two new boys are able to have a big impact on the game,” he said.

“You don’t see a wicketkeeper take five watches very often. I’ve always said when you don’t notice them they’ve done their job which is what Hugh did.

“Coming in for Andy as our spinner for the day, I thought Angus did a terrific job. He managed to contain their best player Ben Morris (who scored 52 off 83) when he tried to take the game deep.

“Angus is a terrific all-round cricketer so I was pleased to see him do so well on his debut.”

The win saw Canterbury maintain its spot on top of the Dunstan Shield ladder.

North Balwyn sits in second place with only percentage separating the two sides.

“It certainly wasn’t an easy game despite the difference in ladder positions,” Seymour said.

“Heathmont still has a lot to play for and we need to keep winning. If we were to drop a game there’s every possibility we would fall to fourth and sit right on the edge.

“It’s important we keep winning games.”
