A LONG-STANDING Camberwell Junction family restaurant would be razed if plans for a 43-apartment complex with licensed eateries are approved.
Popular Italian eatery Sofia’s would be bulldozed to make way for a major development if it goes ahead.
But the Boroondara Council confirmed the facade of the State Saving Bank next door would remain.
Under a planning application submitted to the council, the estimated $18 million project would comprise an eight-storey building of 43 apartments, a cafe, wine bar and restaurant.

Hawthorn state Liberal MP John Pesutto welcomed the plans, but said the development must strike a balance which respected local heritage and promoted the area’s amenity.
“Burke Rd, Camberwell is a special place with significant cultural and historic value going beyond its importance as a shopping precinct and transport hub,” Mr Pesutto said.
“Done properly, a redevelopment of the site could generate great economic benefits for local traders and employees.
“But (it) should only proceed subject to genuine input from residents to safeguard the area’s culture and character.”
Part of the site was demolished more than 20 years ago, until a stop order was issued after council officers discovered it was being done without a permit.
The council has sought further details about the application before putting it out for public consultation.
Sofia’s management was contacted for comment.
The developer’s details have not yet been released.
