AFTER more than 20 years, the dilapidated former state bank site in Burke Rd Camberwell is being earmarked for a major development.

Plans have been drawn up for a nine-storey, 59 apartment complex at the prime central Camberwell position which will also take in the site currently occupied by Sofia’s Restaurant.

The proposal also includes a basement carpark, restaurant, cafe and wine bar.

Boroondara Council director of City Planning John Luppino said the proposal had indicated it would retain the existing State Saving Bank facade and incorporate it into the development.

“Council has requested further information be submitted by the applicant to enable a full assessment to be undertaken,” Mr Luppino said.

“Once the information is received, council will require public notice to be given and people will be able to view the plans and make submissions.

“The owners have had planning permits issued for the development of both Sofia’s and the old State Savings bank site since 2003.

“With the most recent permit lapsing in March 2013. We look forward to an appropriate development be achieved on this important Burke Rd site.”

Neither the developers or planning consultants Pro-Urban — acting on behalf of the developers — responded to the Progress Leader’s questions before deadline.

Hawthorn state Liberal MP John Pesutto said a redevelopment of the site was long overdue.

“In addition to its cultural and historic significance, Burke Rd, Camberwell is a major shopping precinct and public transport hub which makes it critically important,” Mr Pesutto said.

“A sensible redevelopment of this site will generate economic benefits for local traders, although specific proposals will need to appreciate the area’s culture and character, as well as satisfy proper community consultation.”
