A teen brute who threatened to bash a man’s wife and young children during a terrifying home invasion will spend the next year and a half in prison.

Sidi Mohammed Sidi, 19, pleaded guilty at the County Court last month to two charges of armed robbery and one of home invasion after finding his victims online via Gumtree in late 2018.

The court heard Sidi responded to two separate advertisements by men selling mobile phones and arranged to meet them at their homes to pick up the phone and hand over the cash.

When Sidi and a friend arrived at the first man’s house on December 14, 2018, Sidi pulled out a knife with a 30cm blade and held it in front of the frightened man’s face before stealing his phone and fleeing.

In the second incident he turned up at a young family’s house with two friends, one male and one female, and threatened to have one of his friends bash the man, his wife and young children, then aged six and nine, with a piece of wood if he didn’t hand over the phone.

The victim’s wife intervened, picking up a kitchen stool and throwing it at Sidi and his mates, causing them to flee empty-handed.

Sidi’s defence lawyer told the court his client, who attended Malvern East Primary School, had fallen off the rails and was a heavy cocaine user.

County Court Judge Gregory Lyon said Sidi’s actions were “obnoxious and abhorrent”.

“The idea that strangers will walk into a person’s home with the object of robbing them under threat of violence is obnoxious and abhorrent,” Judge Lyon said

“The threat to harm the children was cowardly, thuggish and despicable … this offending will stay with all victims, adults and children alike, for a long, long time.”

Sidi was sentenced on December 18 to 18 months’ jail at a youth justice centre.

Judge Lyon noted Sidi had already served 340 days in jail since his arrest in January last year.
