A huge car explosion rocked a Cranbourne street early this morning, with the blaze terrifying nearby neighbours.

A loud bang could be heard as the car was engulfed in flames and smoke billowed into the air near Toirram Crescent, Cranbourne – close to the train lines, about 2am.

Andee Ebery, who sent footage of the explosion to Leader, said his family were awake feeding their baby when they heard a “massive bang”.

“I thought it was a gunshot, then heard it again so I went outside to have a look and there were flames everywhere so I called triple-0,” Mr Ebery said.

He said he was gravely concerned the fire would spiral out of control.

“We didn’t want the fire to come our way or continue to burn down the trees and start a massive fire.”

“It took emergency services about 20 to 30 minutes to get there – they could’ve come a bit quicker but they did a very good job putting out the fire – no one was hurt that’s the main thing.”

Several residents also posted to Facebook’s Casey Crime Page, saying they were woken by a “loud bang”.

One woman wrote: “It was so loud my kids woke up scared and crying and it shook our windows. That was no fireworks.”

A CFA spokeswoman said the fire was called in at 1.41am, with the rail lines closed off during the incident.

The spokeswoman said the incident had now been marked safe.

CFA volunteer Graham Fountain said this type of behaviour was “irresponsible”.

“Any sort of behaviour that threaten or results in a fire during a summer period, particularly when we’re confronting the devastating fires in Gippsland and the northeast is irresponsible.”

“People need to be aware of the risk environment they live in or visit during this period.”
