A Malvern East aged care centre has been locked down after a staff member tested positive to the deadly coronavirus.

Regis Healthcare confirmed the positive case at its Regis East Malvern centre on Waverley Rd, which has more than 150 residents, on Sunday, August 9.

The staff member last worked in the centre’s kitchen on Sunday, August 2.

In an online statement, Regis chief executive Linda Mellors said the provider had enacted its outbreak management plan at the centre, which included making all residents stay in their rooms.

Ms Mellors said the affected staff member was at home recovering and the healthcare organisation would provide support as needed.

“We have commenced contact tracing to identify other staff members who were in close contact with the staff member who has tested positive,” Ms Mellors said.

“These staff members will also be asked to get tested and remain in isolation in line with government guidelines.”

Ms Mellors said the Department of Health and Human Services would test all residents and staff in the coming days to help with contract tracing inside the centre.

She said the home would be locked down for at least four days until all test results came back.

Ms Mellors said the outbreak management plan was “rigorous” and would be based on lessons learnt from a previous outbreak at its Brighton centre, which has claimed three lives.

She said the centre would provide daily email updates and extra iPads and tablets were being delivered to residents to allow them to stay in touch with loved ones while confined to their rooms.
