A man has been arrested after he allegedly broke into a car, drove off with the owner inside, then parked it and ran away.
Stonnington detective Senior Sergeant Rick Macdonald said the incident occurred at 12.30am when officers noticed a man having a cigarette and standing next to his car near Kings Way in South Melbourne.
Sen-Sgt Macdonald said the 22-year-old St Kilda man told police another man had tried to drive off in his car, a white Holden sedan, and he also got inside to try and stop him.
According to the St Kilda man, the offender drove the car for a short distance before he jumped out and ran away.
Sen-Sgt Macdonald said officers found a 21-year-old man of no fixed address in surrounding streets a short time later and arrested him in relation to the incident.
The man was remanded and charged with breach of bail offences and car theft and will front Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
Sen-Sgt Macdonald said police were investigating why both men were out past the curfew.
The Government has enforced the curfew throughout metropolitan Melbourne from 8am to 5pm until at least September 13 as part of its Stage 4 coronavirus outbreak restrictions.
