A man in his 20s remains in hospital after he had a glass bottle smashed in his face during an early morning brawl between two groups of youths on Chapel St.

Stonnington detective Senior Sergeant Andrew Tucker said the incident occurred near Windsor railway station on the popular Melbourne party strip and involved eight people.

Sgt Tucker said two groups of four youths in their 20s, including a group of men, and a group of men and women, had an argument at 3.30am on Monday, March 8.

He said it led to a fight breaking out on the street, with a member of the male group allegedly glassed and two of his friends punched in the face.

The three men were taken to The Alfred for treatment and observation, with two men from Truganina released a short time later.

Sgt Tucker said the glassing victim, a 23-year-old male from an unknown address, suffered serious facial injuries including fractures and lacerations and remained in hospital in a stable condition.

He said police were continuing to search for the group of alleged attackers who fled the scene after the incident.

Sgt Tucker said officers had obtained CCTV footage of the incident and suspected the group of alleged attackers were affected by alcohol.

Any witnesses or anyone with information is urged to phone Stonnington detectives on 9520 5200 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
