Fast food fans in the inner east will soon be able to get drive-through tacos with a popular Mexican chain to open on a prime corner site.
Guzman Y Gomez will open its newest Melbourne store in Chadstone later this year, taking over the space previously occupied by the Red Rooster store on the corner of Warrigal and Waverley roads.
Red Rooster closed at the start of 2021 after nearly 30 years at the site after its lease expired.
Guzman Y Gomez’s drive-through store will be its 23rd in Victoria and the second it has opened in Melbourne’s east this year.
Big queues formed when fans flocked for cheap burritos on the opening day of its Croydon store on Maroondah Highway in April.
A Guzman Y Gomez spokeswoman said the store’s opening had been delayed due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic but was “not far away”.
The store is being led by franchisees Tammy and David Walker and more than 100 staff have been hired.
The spokeswoman said the chain expected the store to be “as popular as all of our drive throughs in Melbourne”.
“We have a very specific real estate plan and have been planning to build in Malvern East for a long time so we couldn’t be more excited for this restaurant to come to life.,” the spokeswoman said.
“Victoria is one of the fastest growing states for GYG and our top two restaurants are in Victoria, so demand is high”.
The spokeswoman did not say if any other new stores are being planned in other parts of Victoria, and for locals to keep an eye on the chain’s social media pages for the Chadstone store’s opening date.
