Rushworth’s Stephen Fisher faces drug, firearm charges

A Rushworth farm worker made a shocking decision when he put his trust in someone else and filled his bedroom with illegal firearms.

How do juries decide a verdict?

A Rushworth farm maintenance worker busted with a collection of guns in his bedroom claimed he was holding them for someone else, a court has heard.

When police raided Stephen Roy Fisher’s home in March this year they uncovered several guns and an unidentified amount of cannabis.

The 53-year-old pleaded guilty to various drug and firearm offences in Shepparton Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

The court heard authorities found three rifles, a crossbow and revolver in Fisher’s home where he lives with his life.

One of the guns, which was loaded, was located in the top drawer of a filing cabinet in the master bedroom.

Ammunition was also found throughout the home including being stored in shoe boxes.

Defence lawyer Simon Pogue said the weapons belonged to someone who had previously travelled from Melbourne to hunt on the property.

“He made poor judgement to allow him to store them at his home,” Mr Pogue said.

“It was a catastrophic error.”

Police also found five cannabis plants in a vegetable garden among some of the drugs seized.

Drugs were also found in suitcases located in a shed.

Mr Pogue said his client had grown the cannabis for his own personal use to help treat pain.

“He hasn’t used cannabis since that date,” he said.

Fisher will be sentenced at a later date with the magistrate demanding he be in attendance on the day.
