The Greater Shepparton council is warning locals to avoid going near the Kialla Lakes until further notice.

From recent water monitoring the council has detected high levels of green-blue algae in the lakes.

Green-Blue algae forms naturally in water bodies and can be very harmful to humans and animals.

The signs of contact with algae can be skin rashes, sore eyes, ears and nose, or if swallowed, nausea and vomiting.

Residents are urged to not have direct contact with the water as the lake is still open to the public.

Council recommends anyone that gets their water supply from the Kialla Lake to find another source.

Monitoring of the lake is ongoing however it is unknown when the high levels of algae will come down.
