A Western Australian pair has been charged for allegedly stealing a tractor and crashing it into the perimeter fence of an army base.
Police allege a 36-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman from WA were heading towards Seymour on the Goulburn Valley Highway, allegedly “swerving across lanes” on June 17.
The John Deere tractor was captured driving between Arcadia South and Seymour between 8am and 10.40am in the south bound lanes.
A police spokesman said officers arrested the pair after the allegedly stolen tractor crashed into a perimeter fence of the Puckapunyal Army base.
“No one was injured during the incident,” the spokesman said.
Julie Aimsley, who provided dashcam footage of the tractor, said she had captured the video just after 10am that day while she was driving on the highway, before police started to chase the vehicle.
“It was just before the turnoff to Mangalore Rd off the freeway,” Ms Aimsley told the Herald Sun on Monday.
“If you look closely you can see them fighting over the steering wheel.”
Ms Aimsley said she called police after she captured the footage.
The pair were charged with nine offences, including theft of motor vehicle, possessing methamphetamines, trespassing on commonwealth land, dangerous driving while being pursued by police and criminal damage.
Initially deemed unfit for questioning, the man and woman were remanded in custody and appeared before Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court on June 19.
The pair were further remanded to appear at Benalla Magistrates’ Court on June 20.
