If there is one man who knows something about coaching, it’s Shepparton’s Ian Ritchie.

The Mooroopna women’s A grade hockey mentor has been named Goulburn Valley’s best sport coach.

Ritchie arrived in the Goulburn Valley in 1983 having started playing hockey at the age of 10 in Melbourne.

He started coaching three years later and it has been difficult to stop his involvement since — having just four years off.

“I love the game of hockey and it’s allowed me to have some great experiences,” Ritchie said.

“I’ve had the pleasure of coaching about 10 state teams at all different levels. I’ve even been an assistant coach for the Australia country women’s side in the past.

“I’ve wound back a little bit now but it doesn’t mean I love the game any less.”

Ritchie took over as the Mooroopna coach in 2010 when he was approached by players to take over the position and hasn’t looked back.

The team has enjoyed a large amount of success — as he did with SYC, another local club.

“It has been a pleasure to be involved with the game of hockey for such a long time,” he said.

“The Goulburn Valley really does punch above its weight when it comes to the standard and the players we produce.”

Hockey has also been a family affair for Ritchie.

He met his wife through the sport and his children have also played.
