Gunbower Gold Cup 2023: Racegoers flock to the racecourse for a day filled of horseracing action

Despite the cancellation of horse races, hundreds of racegoers flocked to the Gunbower Gold Cup as the spring racing carnival kicks off. Guests were dressed to impress as part of our mega gallery.

Punters descended on a country town in the state’s north as the spring racing carnival jumps out of the blocks for a Phantom race day after the horse races were cancelled last minute.

The fowls and fillies were in their best track gear for the Gunbower Gold Cup on Saturday where the gates open at 11am.

The Gunbower Racing Club had to make the difficult decision to cancel all jump races for the day due to the 45mm rain the state endured during the week — and instead held a Phantom race day.

Racegoers sat back with a glass of wine, got on punt and there was plenty of action trackside, including the Fashions on the Field competition.

Ashlea Mason was crowned as stylish lady of the day and Lucas Clark was stylish teen of the day.

The Herald Sun attended the cup and photographed guests strutting their stuff.

Bendigo racegoer Jim Burns said the atmosphere was unbelievable despite the cancellation of the horse races.

“Still everyone rocked up and it was good after the past few years not having it,” Mr Burns said.

“Everyone’s here to have a good time so why not.

“There’s no horses but I think everyone is just enjoying it.”
