A man has tragically died after a car hit a tree and caught fire in the state’s north as police investigate what happened.

Emergency services were called to a crash on Girgarre-Rushworth Rd just after 5.45am Tuesday.

The 21-year-old male driver, died at the scene as police investigate the circumstances leading to the crash.

Girgarre-Rushworth Rd is closed from Zegelin Rd to Clarke Rd, and Home Rd is blocked off from Middle Rd to Girgarre-Rushworth Rd.

Police believe the driver was travelling through Rushworth before the car left the road.
