A Shepparton man allegedly punched a cop and stabbed his housemate, a court has heard.

Daniel Stewart, 20, was bailed at Shepparton Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

He is facing 12 charges including assaulting an emergency worker, resisting an emergency worker, being drunk in a public place, causing intentional injury, making a threat to kill and unlawful assault with a weapon.

The court heard Stewart allegedly stabbed his housemate following an argument because he had allegedly punched holes in the wall.

The victim tried to keep the accused in his room to stop the fighting before Stewart called his brother and said he was going to kill his housemates.

The accused grabbed two knives from the kitchen and stabbed his victim in the right arm, causing a deep laceration later treated at Goulburn Valley Health.

When police arrived, the accused was holding a knife and trying to stab the victim.

Police drew both tasers to de-escalate the situation before Stewart dropped the knife on police command.

It’s alleged he can be seen on body-worn footage kicking at the police officers during the arrest yelling “I’m stabbing him” before elbowing his victim in the face leaving him with a fractured nose.

It is alleged he yelled “you’re a dead man c**t” among other racial slurs as he was taken away by authorities.

Stewart was arrested on Sunday morning at his Shepparton home where he had been drinking and smoking cannabis with two others.

In an early incident on January 9 this year, police were called to the Aussie Hotel in Shepparton after reports of two men refusing to leave.

When police arrived the accused was allegedly standing with security before authorities tried to talk to him.

Stewart is alleged to have thrown a right hand punch without warning at one of the officers leaving him with blurred vision.

Security acted quickly taking him to the ground but Stewart is alleged to have resisted arrest as he attempted to kick the officers.

Other officers across the road came to the aid of their fellow police members and helped to complete the arrest.

Stewart was bailed and remanded to appear in court over the incident in June but failed to attend.

Stewart’s defence lawyer said her client was someone with no priors before the court.

“Alcohol use is at the heart of this offending,” she said.

His matters will now return to court next month.
