Adam Winmar appeared before Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday following the shooting death of his girlfriend, Kiara Ferguson

A Lalor man accused of the shooting death of his girlfriend in Shepparton has faced court.

The man charged with the shooting death of his pregnant girlfriend has had his case adjourned on Monday at Melbourne Magistrates Court.

Adam Winmar, 29, who now calls Lalor home, appeared before court via AV Link sporting a full beard.

Almost immediately it was determined by the magistrate that the matter must return to Shepparton Magistrates’ Court.

There was no push back to this as Mr Winmar’s defence intimated they’d be seeking an adjournment.

Mr Winmar has been charged with unlawfully killing his girlfriend Kiara Ferguson on April 1, 2023.

He is also facing a charge of being in possession of a firearm despite being a prohibited person.

Mr Winmar told police Ms Ferguson had discovered a homemade pipe gun, and approached him as he sat on the toilet saying, “What have I told you about this?”

He told police The alleged victim threw the weapon with it accidentally discharging, resulting in the death of the 27-year-old.

Mr Winmar was arrested after calling triple-0 in the immediate aftermath of the incident.

Paramedics tried to save Ms Ferguson at the scene, but she died soon after.

Mr Winmar will next appear at Shepparton Magistrates Court for a committal mention on May 28.
