Whitehorse abandoned buildings attract graffiti vandals and fears of squatters

Whitehorse is known for its leafy, attractive streets. But it’s becoming known for something far less desirable — abandoned properties, which are a magnet for vandals and anti-social behaviour. See some of the sites causing concern.

Whitehorse home and business owners who abandon their property or buildings to become overgrown, graffiti-covered and vandalised eyesores should be slugged with heavy fines, angry neighbours say.

The Whitehorse Leader is aware of a number of vacant locations that have been targeted by anti-social behaviour — some of which have been abandoned for years.

It’s also been alleged squatters have taken over some of the properties.

Taking to Whitehorse Leader’s Facebook page, Heidi N David Lee said it was time to hit the owners in the hip pocket.

“Start fining unsightly properties after suitable warnings,’’ they said, while Jo Goland said it was a huge issue.

“Who can actually afford that unless you are an overseas investor who doesn’t care, or super rich?’’ Ms Goland said.

“The council should be able to fine unkempt and abandoned properties. It’s 2019, if you can’t afford upkeep, sell it for a small fortune.”

Penelope Ison said: “Stop selling to overseas investors, change the law to stipulate occupation within 6-12 months,’

Neighbouring Maroondah Council, which is also battling a war against abandoned eyesores, has the power to double the landowner’s rates on any property deemed to be in unsatisfactory condition.

Whitehorse general manager corporate services Peter Smith said properties that were not maintained could have a negative impact on neighbouring properties and businesses.

Whitehorse general manager human services Terry Wilkinson said while the council was not aware of anyone sleeping in abandoned building, it did know of a number of people sleeping in privately-owned buildings.

Mr Smith said the council could take action over unsightly properties and dilapidated buildings.

The council’s website states penalties apply for breaches of the Community Local Law and a failure to follow a notice to comply can include the issue of an infringement and referral a magistrates’ court.

Ms Wilkinson said the council passed on all complaints related to anti-social behaviour to police.

Whitehorse Leader recently reported on Brand Receptions in Mahoneys Rd, which went from being a popular meeting place for businesses and a wedding venue to a magnet for graffiti vandals and ‘low-lifes’ smashing in windows.

Other locations that have been abandoned for some time are at 395 Canterbury Rd, 2 Katupna Court, as well as several linked properties at 497-501, all in Vermont.
