A man who punched his heavily pregnant girlfriend in the head after an argument at a Forest Hill restaurant has been told his actions brought him within a hair’s width of going to jail.
The 19-year-old Brisbane man, who the Leader cannot name, fronted Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on Friday, December 6 after he attacked his girlfriend, who was eight months pregnant, earlier this year.
Police prosecutor Senior Constable Ernie Karsai told the court the man yelled at his partner and called her a “f-ing idiot”, causing her to flee the Springvale Rd restaurant in fear.
The man chased her down the road and viciously punched her to the head before returning to their home and smashing the television and the front door, causing more than a $1000 in damage.
The woman was granted an intervention order against the man as a result of the offence, and the man’s Legal Aid defence counsel said he’d since moved back to Brisbane.
His defence told the court the man shared child with the victim and had taken steps to address his anger issues.

He also said his client had no prior history of offending and requested the court consider placing him on a good behaviour bond.
But Magistrate Timothy Walsh said his actions were totally “unacceptable” and said a “hefty fine” was warranted.
“I view this extremely seriously, if you were 23 or 24 the (sentence) indication would be you would be going out that door (to jail),” Mr Walsh said.
“An eight-month pregnant woman, you chased her and punched her in the head. Unacceptable.”
Mr Walsh fined the man $1200.
