A teenager is recovering in hospital after he was stabbed in the chest with a knife inside one of Melbourne’s biggest shopping centres.

Manningham police detective Senior Sergeant Glenn Boxhall said the incident happened on level one of Westfield Doncaster, near Woolworths and MyChemist, about 5.30pm on November 28.

Sen-Sgt Boxhall said a dispute took place involving a group of youths before a 17-year-old boy was allegedly stabbed by another 17-year-old boy.

He said a dozen police units responded to the incident and established a crime scene, while paramedics treated the victim before taking him to The Royal Melbourne Hospital, where he required surgery.

The victim is believed to be in a stable condition.

Sen-Sgt Boxhall said the alleged attacker was arrested and taken into custody and would be questioned on Monday.

Charges are yet to be laid over the incident and police are reviewing CCTV footage.

Sen-Sgt Boxhall said police would look to boost their patrols of the shopping centre and its surrounds to provide community reassurance after the incident.

He said police were continuing their investigations and asked any witnesses or anyone who had footage of the incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Westfield Doncaster owners Scentre Group have been contacted for comment.
