Young drivers have been put on notice after four teens lost their licenses for alleged hooning on the same road on the Mornington Peninsula in the one night.

Somerville police caught and penalised four 19-year-old drivers in separate incidents on Peninsula Link between 9pm on Sunday and 12.30am on Monday.

Each of the teens were clocked allegedly driving at between 25km/h and more than 60km/h over the freeway’s 100km/h speed limit, between the Nepean Highway and its flyover bridge.

Police caught the first driver, a Cranbourne woman, driving at 127km/h at about 9pm, allegedly in an unregistered car and without her P-plates displayed.

An hour later, officers pulled over a Narre Warren man who zoomed by at 161 km/h.

Later in the night, officers clocked a Thornbury man driving at 141km/hr about 11pm, and a Mount Eliza man driving at 127km/h at 12.30am.

The Narre Warren man had his driver’s license immediately suspended, while the Thornbury man lost his license for six months.

The Cranbourne woman and the Mount Eliza man had their licenses suspended for three months and received penalty notices.

Somerville highway patrol Acting Sergeant Raj Sharma blasted the young drivers for their alleged hoon behaviour, saying it was lucky none of the incidents were fatal.

“These young people think they are invincible, and they need to remember that having a licence is a privilege and not a right,” Acting Sgt Sharma said.

“Each of them have had their license for less than 12 months and by driving at these speeds, they are taking their lives into their own hands.”

Acting Sgt Sharma warned drivers, particularly Schoolies holidaying in the area, that officers were out in force monitoring their behaviour on local roads.

“While we understand that they’ve had a tough couple of years throughout the pandemic, we want them to enjoy themselves with their friends and get home safely to begin the rest of their lives, post high school.”
