Protecting Warrandyte’s green wedge from tourist-related development could be a step closer after a recommendation by a State Government planning panel.

The panel’s findings, which recommend strengthening planning controls to protect the area, go against a Manningham Council proposal to promote economic development.

The plan was a response to a decline in the land being used for agriculture.

The panel handed down its findings after a three-day hearing where 27 submitters spoke to their objections.

The report, which is expected to be considered by the council later this month, said pushing for more tourism in the green wedge did not represent sound planning.

Many of the objections came from members of the volunteer organisation Friends of Warrandyte State Park.

Spokeswoman Joy Dahl said in a statement the panel hearing was “very positive from our point of view”.

“The panel recommended the council adopt their extensively edited version (of the proposed planning amendments),” she said.

“This version entirely removes the most concerning clause which would have opened the door to unsustainable development by reducing existing planning protections.”

The council will consider whether to accept the panel’s proposed changes to the planning amendment before a final decision on whether it is adopted is made by the State Government’s planning minister.

Acting director of city planning and community Lee Robson said the council would consider the panel’s recommendations at its meeting on February 26.
