A CONTROVERSIAL retirement village planned for a Doncaster East shopping centre will go ahead after a successful mediation process between the developer and Manningham Council.
Developer Stockland went public with plans to build a five-storey retirement village next door to The Pines last September but met with opposition from the council on elements of the design.
A mediation process pursued through VCAT led to Stockland revising elements of the carpark design and increasing the availability of public parking from the original plans.

The plans have also been amended to dedicate 5 per cent of the apartments to affordable housing.
The $5 million project will include a retirement village, consisting of four five-storey buildings, developed on The Pines’ southwest carpark.
The village will have 280 apartments, with the total number of car parks available to increase from 835 to 914 spaces.
Objections were received following an advertising period in February, with 32 submissions relating primarily to overdevelopment, inadequate carparking and traffic congestion.
The project will include a resident clubhouse, communal dining, health and wellbeing facilities, and carparking for homeowners.
Cr Paul McLeish said the changes had made it a project the council could be proud to support.
“Previously I spoke against this because the outcomes for our community were not good. Since then we’ve had the compulsory mediation process, we’ve got an increase in public parking and 5 per cent of units allocated to affordable housing,” he said.
“There are some things you can hang your hat on as a councillor and, for me, this is one of those things.”
