PREMIER Cricket powerhouse Fitzroy Doncaster will boast one of the best new ball attacks in the competition’s recent history this summer.

Reigning Ryder medallist Trent Lawford and Andrew Perrin, fresh off a state contract, will spearhead the Lions’ quest for a third premiership in four seasons.

Lawford took 62 wickets last season and Perrin claimed 50 scalps in 2015-16 before earning a deal with Tasmania, where he cracked three first-class games.

The pair terrorised batsmen in 2015-16 when they combined for 97 wickets to lead Fitzroy Doncaster to its first premiership in 14 years.

First-year captain Ejaaz Alavi said Perrin, 28, still harboured state ambitions after he was cut by the Tigers at the end of last season.

“We’d love him to be playing higher level again, whether that is Victoria or another state. We’re hoping he can do that,” Alavi said.

“He’s got the skills and he’s going to be fantastic and we know what Lawford can do.”

Perrin will help cover the loss of star all-rounder Matt Frith, who has moved to South Australia, while fringe paceman Josh White has also departed Schramms Reserve.

Former state cricketer Lloyd Mash will turn out for junior club Eltham in a handful of games after calling time on his distinguished Premier Cricket career.

Brothers Sam and Zac Elliott, sons of former Australian batsman Matthew, could push for a spot in the First XI.

Sam is viewed as a promising quick, while Zac topped Fitzroy Doncaster’s Second XI runscorers table last summer with 408 runs.

Top-order batsman Noah Korkolis will also be looking to nail down a place in the First XI, while Lakshmn Shivakkumar has joined the Lions from Essendon.

Alavi said Fitzroy Doncaster would again be aiming to feature at the sharp end of the summer.

“You always want to be at the top and stay at the top. It’s what we’d like to do again this season,” he said.

“It’s good we’ve got more of a mixture of experience and youth with a few younger players going to get opportunities.

“It’s going to be good for the growth of the club as well.”
