A police officer will face a wait of nearly a year as he contests charges over dangerous driving and exceeding the speed limits.

Saurabh Sehgal, 39, appeared in the online Melbourne Magistrates’ Court faced with speeding and dangerous driving charges from June 18 last year.

Constable Sehgal, who is stationed in the eastern region, is facing five charges that allege he exceeded the speed limits on June 18 in 2021, allegedly doing 20/30kmh above the speed limit in some cases.

He is also facing two charges of driving in a manner dangerous to the public and two charges of driving at a speed dangerous to the public.

Constable Sehgal was suspended with pay following an internal investigation into his actions.

The defence and prosecution agreed to an adjournment of the case for an in-person hearing at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court at a later date.

Magistrate Angela Bolger believed the in-person hearing at Ringwood would be more appropriate given the contested nature of the case.

Constable Sehgal’s defence, represented by Zarah Garde-Wilson, has asked for more defined particulars about the charges before the next court appearance ahead of mounting their defence.

The case was adjourned to Ringwood Magistrates’ Court from October 17 to 19 next year.
