Record breaking burpee challenge

OAKLEIGH’S neglected transport interchange is being shopped around to major political parties by Monash Council in the hope of scoring much-needed cash for safety upgrades.

The council is hoping its appeal for a $14.15 million fix will pay off as both the Coalition and Labor dish out promises to win voters in the lead-up to the state election.

Mayor Paul Klisaris said the council wanted to create an attractive, safe pedestrian environment around a reinvigorated public transport hub that fit the unique character of the Oakleigh Village.

“We also want to improve the connections between the bus interchange and train station, to give a better experience for pedestrians and cyclists, while making sure the traffic, particularly buses, flows better,” Cr Klisaris said.

He said Oakleigh was a busy area and could be “quite chaotic” around the interchange.

“We want to make the experience of using the transport interchange and coming to Oakleigh better for all users and create more enjoyable public spaces,” Cr Klisaris said.

“Oakleigh is a fantastic place and draws visitors from all over Melbourne to shop and dine, especially in Eaton Mall. This is an exciting time for the area.”

Cr Stuart James said the Oakleigh railway station precinct had not changed since he was a child. “The whole area is uninviting to visitors and has a massive focus towards vehicles and traffic,” he said.

Oakleigh state Labor MP Steve Dimopoulos said the proposal had merit for the Oakleigh community, specifically making the area safer for pedestrians and cyclists, but steered clear of committing any money.

Mr Dimopoulos said while the proposal was “still in the early stages”, he would discuss it with key ministers to determine if there were any money options to help Monash Council complete the project.
