A huge response from the community helped Monash Council reject a massive development in Oakleigh South.
The proposal at 1 Beryl Ave, the site of the former Oakleigh South Primary School, garnered 1493 submissions before coming to council, including a 36-page document analysing the prospective development.
The Golf Road project development proposed 89 townhouses on less than 2ha.
It is the second time in three years that the community has banded together to combat a perceived overdevelopment of the site, after more than 1100 people signed a petition in protest of a proposal.
Council officers agreed with many of the arguments against the proposal raised by the community, which included carparking, the garages being too small, traffic management, accessibility and 48 of the 55 trees removed.
Cr Stuart James said the main concern was the traffic flow into the area and the parking in the site.
“Tandem carparks rarely work,” he said. “One car uses it, the other is used for storage, while the other car goes on the street.
“It would be a terrible outcome for the community, absolute traffic mayhem.
“These sort of applications, the developer tries to get every last dollar out of the community.”

Cr Lynette Saloumi said the proposal was “the sort of thing that angers so many residents”, while Cr Rebecca Paterson hoped to see somebody buy the block of land to develop something “sensible that fits into the neighbourhood”.
“It is very disheartening when it keeps happening, I really hope we don’t see a development like this on the land,” she said.
The case will be heard at VCAT next March.
Monash Leader wasn’t able to contact the developer.
