Manningham Street Watch: Motorcyclist veers off Templestowe Rd trying to overtake cars

A motorcyclist who lost control on a bend in Lower Templestowe may have been drinking before the crash. That mishap leads this week’s crime and traffic report from around Manningham.

A Box Hill South motorcyclist may have been under the influence of alcohol when he came off his bike in Lower Templestowe.

The 49-year-old lost control of his motorcycle and veered into grass next to Templestowe Rd about 7.20pm on October 11.

Nunawading highway patrol Sergeant Simon Webb said police believed he misjudged a bend after overtaking several cars.

He was taken to Box Hill Hospital where he was treated for minor leg injuries and not admitted.

Sgt Webb said police were waiting on the results of a blood test before taking further action.

TEMPLESTOWE

A motorist was treated at the Austin Hospital for minor injuries after slamming into the back of a stationary car in Templestowe. The 31-year-old Templestowe woman was driving along Foote St at 5.40pm on October 14 when she failed to notice an Audi coming to a stop in front of her. The 37-year-old Ringwood East man was waiting to turn right when the Volvo collided with his car. Sgt Webb said both cars were extensively damaged. The Audi driver was uninjured. Sgt Webb said police would likely fine the Volvo driver for careless driving.

WONGA PARK

A passenger was left with shoulder injuries after the car she was travelling in was struck and sent flying into a dental clinic in Blackburn on Sunday, October 13. Nunawading highway patrol Sergeant Paul Egan said an 82-year-old Wonga Park man failed to see an oncoming Lexus when he turned his Ford right out of Holland Rd and into Canterbury Rd about 11.40am. His car collided with the Lexus, being driven by a 54-year-old Mont Albert woman, sending it out of her control and through a nearby fence and into the wall of a dental clinic. Neither driver was injured, but an 84-year-old Mont Albert woman, who was in the front passenger seat of the Lexus, was taken to The Alfred. The driver of the Ford was fined for failing to give way.

DONCASTER EAST

A man discovered a fire in a garden bed of his Doncaster East home after smoke from the flames entered his house and activated alarms. The Saxonwood Drive homeowner rushed to extinguish the small blaze with a garden hose at 4am on October 17. MFB firefighters made sure the fire was totally out. Nunawading Sergeant Simon Webb said police believed an unknown offender poured petrol on the garden bed before igniting it. He said anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers.

WARRANDYTE

A grey Audi stolen in a burglary in Warrandyte was later found destroyed by fire in a nearby park. Thieves broke into a Mopoke Hill Rd home on October 14, taking valuables including the car keys. They stole the vehicle and drove to nearby Taroona Reserve where they set fire to the car. The alarm was raised about 8.30pm and MFB firefighters extinguished the blaze. Sgt Webb said anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers.

TEMPLESTOWE

Templestowe Hotel staff called firefighters after a discovering a strong burning smell from the laundry of the Parker St venue. MFB officers discovered a build-up of lint was starting to smoulder behind the dryers about 5pm on October 14. Sgt Webb said lint filters on all domestic and commercial dryers should be cleared regularly.

WARRANDYTE

A woman walking through Warrandyte State Park was startled to come across what she thought were human remains on October 14 at 10.30am. She alerted police with tests confirming the bones were not human.

Manningham police have welcomed eight new officers, with a further three expected next February. Inspector Craig Pearson said the staff were working on “intelligence-led priorities”. He said there would also be greater emphasis on visiting a range of community locations and precincts. “We recently had Coffee With A Cop at our shopping centres and we have received great feedback about this engagement with our community. Please say hello to your local police when you get the chance.”
