A tradie who left a woman in a gutter after dragging her for 10m in her car claimed in court it was a “mistake.”

Damian Watts, 36, pleaded guilty to failing to render assistance after an accident and failing to report an incident to the police in the Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

The court heard Watts was arguing with a woman for two hours at her home, when he decided to walk away and get in his car.

The woman he was arguing with followed Watts to the car and attempted to get in the passenger seat.

Watts reversed to drive away while the woman was still holding onto the car, and was dragged for 10m before being left face down in the gutter in front of her 13-year-old son

Watts called the 13-year-old and asked if he should come back and the child informed him he had already called an ambulance.

Watts called his mother and did not return to the scene.

In court, Watts’ lawyer said the incident was a “mistake” and he did not know the woman was trying to get in the car until he looked in the mirror and saw she had fallen to the ground.

The Burwood man was handed a $2000 fine without conviction.
