Crime: Recorded offences drop across Whitehorse but increase in Burwood

Crime has significantly dropped in Box Hill amid a slight decrease in recorded crime across the whole of Whitehorse, according to the latest crime stats.
The number of recorded offences in Box Hill has fallen by 20 per cent, Crime Statistics Agency data revealed, while the number of offences in Whitehorse decreased by 1.7 per cent.
However, there was a rise in Burwood, which jumped 14 per cent, with 980 offences recorded, compared to 859 during the same period last year
In Box Hill, a total of 1253 incidents were recorded in the year to March 30, 2018, down from 1571 the year
before.
Inspector Robert May said police had noticed a “significant reduction” in crime in Box Hill after turning their efforts towards repeat offenders in the suburb.

The main improvements came in the drop in theft and incidents of property damage, and breaking and entering.
Insp May said police had specifically been targeting all crimes against the person, such as assaults and family violence, and property crime across the whole municipality.
A total of 8169 offences were recorded in Whitehorse in the year to March 30, compared to 8309 in the previous year.
Crime in Box Hill North came in at 333 offences, down from last year’s 421 offences. In Blackburn, the number fell to 587, following a total of 637 in the previous year.
Insp May said some “problematic, repeat offenders” were based in Burwood, and that extra police patrols had been allocated to cover the suburb.
